Back to chasing!

By From http://stormsrus.blogspot.com/ • Jul 7th, 2012 • Category: Blog Entries.Local

Given the cold front that is forecast to settle southward through Virginia the SPC has posted a slight risk for us tomorrow (Sunday).   The predominant threat will be high winds (uh oh…) but I’m hoping there will be enough directional shear…

Yep, it was a derecho on Friday

By From http://stormsrus.blogspot.com/ • Jul 2nd, 2012 • Category: Blog Entries.Local

And boy was it a strong one…as I’m sure a lot of folks across the Mid-Atlantic can attest to!  This video is a compilation of a few minutes that I filmed before having to retreat inside my house as the wind suddenly gusted to the point where I a…

By From http://stormsrus.blogspot.com/ • Jun 29th, 2012 • Category: Blog Entries.Local

UPDATE 6:00 pm:  I finally saw someone use the “D” word for this oncoming convective juggernaut:  Derecho.  The models have it reaching the Roanoke Valley between 9 and 10 p.m. this evening.  Batten down the hatches! The Storm Predic…

Monday B-U-S-T

By From http://stormsrus.blogspot.com/ • Jun 25th, 2012 • Category: Blog Entries.Local

To sum it up, today was a time and position bust.  We couldn’t get out to chase until nearly 2:30 p.m. today, and at least one really nice storm was already well out of range by that time east of Lynchburg.  We headed out to Bedford anyway in…

Sea breeze front

By From http://stormsrus.blogspot.com/ • Jun 20th, 2012 • Category: Blog Entries.Local

Very obvious sea breeze front pushing inland toward the Wakefield VA radar site.  I thought at first it was an outflow boundary from earlier storms but I couldn’t find any when I looped the radar and the satellite views.

Upcoming Friday chase?

By From http://stormsrus.blogspot.com/ • Jun 20th, 2012 • Category: Blog Entries.Local

Storm Prediction Center’s Day 3 (Friday) convective outlook shows Virginia in a 5% “See Text”, but with a caveat – in the text of course – that they are reserving judgement on a future upgrade in risk status.  The 0Z (Tuesday evening) NAM model ru…

Foiled by early afternoon convection

By From http://stormsrus.blogspot.com/ • Jun 18th, 2012 • Category: Blog Entries.Local

I actually was paying attention to conditions and radar but due to other priorities I was unable to get into position far enough ahead of today’s convective line to actually chase it.  Part of it was severe-warned as it roared through the Roanoke …

June 12th southern VA chase

By From http://stormsrus.blogspot.com/ • Jun 12th, 2012 • Category: Blog Entries.Local

When the Storm Prediction Center indicated a 5% chance at severe storms in western Virginia for today – with no more storm chances for a least another week – I made the command decision to chase today.  Fortuitously my son was also available this …
