The list of breweries participating in the 2102 Northern Virginia BrewFest is available here. Currently there are 10 breweries participating for the first time. They are highlighted in yellow in the listing. With first-timers such as Corcoran, Devils Backbone, DuClaw and Great Lakes, joining over 50 other breweries, there's more than enough reason to go. I know I'm psyched.

The NoVA BrewFest will take place Saturday & Sunday, June 23 & 24 in Leesburg, VA. Tickets are available in advance online, as well as at the gate.

The list of breweries is subject to change. See the "2012 Brewery List" for the latest.

Blue & Gray – Cap Ale House Anniversary Beer

Author: From http://www.musingsoverapint.com/ • May 9th, 2012

Blue & Gray Brewing Company and Capital Ale House are both celebrating their 10 year anniversaries this year. In recognition of the event, Blue & Gray has created a special beer to mark the milestone. There is an announcement on the Capital Ale House website.
Blue and Gray Brewing Company has brewed our latest anniversary beer. The new Capital Ale “Kollaboration Kolsch”, brewed by brewer David Achkio of Richmond, is a refreshing golden ale, hopped with Saaz and Splatz.  It’s bright, with a light delicate body.  A great session beer for the warmer weather, it is a straightforward fresh Kolsch, true to its German origins accentuated by the noble hop character. The ceremonial tapping will be at our Fredericksburg location with a brewery representative this Friday, May 11th at 6pm. The beer will be available at all five Capital Ale House locations while it lasts.

Blue and Gray Brewery President Jeff Fitzpatrick said "We are proud to work with Capital Ale House to develop an anniversary ale for them.  Capital Ale House and Blue & Gray Brewing both celebrate their ten year anniversary this year.  I like to think the success of our respective beer enterprises is related. Happy Anniversary to us!  Cheers."

Both of these businesses have had a profound effect on the craft beer scene in Fredericksburg, and indeed Virginia. Blue & Gray certainly had a major influence on my own interest in craft beer. Capital Ale House provided the opportunity to, well, expand those horizons.

Cheers to both!

Beer and Food Tasting Event

This weekend we held the first of two beer and food tasting events we donated to benefit the school's fund raising activities. These tastings are always a lot of fun to do, and always a lot of work. Admittedly, I had the easier part. I selected the beers and did a lot of talking about them. Colleen spent the day before, and the morning of, cooking all the food to be served. She also worked in the kitchen to prepare the dishes for serving. Food serving, and clearing between each course, was handled deftly by our son.

I selected beers that were readily available in our area, and represented some of the variety of American Craft beer. Of course, there were many beers I could have included but we did want these folks to go home eventually!

Jomo Lager
Starr Hill Brewery, Crozet, Virginia
Amber Lager (4.6% ABV)
Paired with Artichoke Dip and Tortilla Chips

Prima Pils
Victory Brewing Company, Downingtown, Pennsylvania
German Pilsener (5.3% ABV)
Paired with Cheddar Bacon Bites

Port City Optimal Wit
Port City Brewing, Alexandria, Virginia
Belgian White Ale (5.0% ABV)
Paired with Peaches and Cream French Toast Casserole

Bell’s Pale Ale
Bell’s Brewing, Kalamazoo, Michigan
American Pale Ale (5.2% ABV)
Paired with Buffalo Chicken Sliders

Dale’s Old Chub
Oskar Blues Brewing, Longmont, Colorado
Scottish Strong Ale (8% ABV)
Paired with Spicy Beef and Provolone Ciabatta Panini

Flying Dog Wildeman
Flying Dog, Frederick, Maryland
Farmhouse IPA (7.5% ABV)
Paired with Olivada and Mozzarella on French Bread Crostini

Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout
North Coast Brewing Company, Fort Bragg, California
Russian Imperial Stout (9.0% ABV)
Paired with Brownies and Ice Cream

Brooklyn Local 2
Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn, New York
Belgian Dark Ale (9.0% ABV)
Paired with Stilton Cheese, Sugared Walnuts, and Pears

I started out with an explanation of the ways in which beer is a superior beverage for pairing with foods, different types of glassware, how to taste and what to look for, and all the usual beer geek stuff. Then we got down to the tasting.

At this event two of the participants were not beer drinkers, and let me know up front they didn't like beer, but I think they gained some appreciation for good beer. (And they spent money to help the school!) I'm happy to say that even the more experienced beer drinkers learned something new, so the afternoon was a success.

One of the most fun parts of doing these tastings is the feedback on the pairings. We can drink beer pretty often, but the opportunity to sit down and really explore how various beers and food work together is a more rare event. And I must admit that the highlight of the whole event was the food. There's no denying that Colleen put together an amazing array of tasty foods.

The Jomo Lager and Artichoke Dip we started off with was a good ice breaker. Nothing extravagant, but a typical pub food combo. Next up was a pairing we had never served previously, but an educated guess said it would work. And it did, very well. The mild smokiness of the Cheddar Bacon Bites complimented the bitter Prima Pils perfectly. That appetizer recipe can be found here. I think everyone was unanimous in selecting this as the best pairing of them all.

The Optimal Wit paired with the Peaches and Cream French Toast Casserole was inspired by a Christmas breakfast I enjoyed a few years ago. This was another winning combination; check out the recipe here. The Buffalo Chicken Sliders are a Musings favorite, easily one of the most popular blog posts on this site. The Old Chub and Panini combination worked well. The spicy beef had been slow cooked with a brown ale. That was quickly followed with the Wildeman Farmhouse IPA and Olivada. This one didn't work as well as I had hoped. We may have to adjust this course to use a traditional Saison-style beer as we have in the past.

We typically close with a surprise dessert of a stout and ice cream float. However this time we paired Russian Imperial Stout with a homemade brownie served à la mode. The vanilla ice cream with the stout worked exceptionally well. Interestingly the brownie was a bit too "tame." I think a touch of bitter dark chocolate melted on top would have been just the trick.

Finally the Brooklyn Local #2 course. This refreshing dish was a very fine finish to the event. Folks seemed pleasantly surprised at the lighter flavor profile of the dark Belgian ale. The blue cheese and sugared walnuts complimented the dark fruit of the beer quite well. Food preparation finished, this is when Colleen was also able to come into the dining room and enjoy a class of Local 2 herself.

We finished off with some coffee and more conversation. It was a fun afternoon packed with good beer and good food. Colleen's recipes were in demand and she's promised to share them with the folks at the tasting. As I sat down afterwards to write down some notes, while the afternoon was still fresh in my mind, I had a full belly, but was already considering opening another good beer. I think I needed one to sip in silence to unwind.

Capital Ale House Oktoberfest At Risk

Author: From http://www.musingsoverapint.com/ • Apr 11th, 2012

It's a story repeated every year. Some downtown Fredericksburg merchants are again complaining about the one-day street party sponsored by Capital House Ale to celebrate Oktoberfest. The event, held annually since 2009, was attended by over 9,000 people last year. However, each year it seems the same merchants raise objections.

Today, a Capital Ale House official was quoted at the Fredericksburg.com news blog, "If it’s not going to benefit us or downtown," president Matt Simmons said Wednesday,  "I don’t think we’d be interested in continuing to do it."

There's a poll too. Go to the link and let your voice be heard.

Stonewall Stout for St. Paddy’s Day

Author: From http://www.musingsoverapint.com/ • Mar 18th, 2012

As anticipated, yesterday's festivities made for a long, but fun day. After walking with the school group in the parade, it was finally time to enjoy some Blue & Gray Stonewall Stout. Although I lean towards the Falmouth Pale Ale as my "go to" beer at the brewery, each time I have this stout I'm reminded just how good this year-round Blue & Gray staple is.

Stonewall Stout pours as black as the night, with a short-lived beige head. The aroma gives off mild roasted notes. The flavor a mix of dark roasted espresso and bitter chocolate, with some bitter hop notes lingering in the finish. Despite the near 80° temps and bright sun, this dark beer was an enjoyable afternoon treat.

The unseasonably warm weather was an unusual treat in itself. So often the day of this annual celebration turns out to be cold and wet, and not exactly pleasant weather to be celebrating outside. However St. Patrick smiled on us this day, and the weather was great. The Spring-like weather brought out an extra large crowd for the parade, and for the festivities that followed. The large turnout made for some long food and beer lines, but even while waiting everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Once we had our food and beer in hand we settled down to enjoy the company of good friends and the great weather.

Oh, and the Irish Coffee that Colleen made for dessert that evening was the perfect cap to the day.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

It's often said that everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day. Fortunately we can make that claim, by portion, all year long. We're doubly blessed since St. Patrick is also our parish patron Saint. Today is going to be a busy day!

Of course, we'll start with Mass, followed by a pancake breakfast social at the church. Copious stacks of pancakes are waiting to be consumed. After that we'll head right over to the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and Celebration at the Blue & Gray Brewery. Guess what? More food! They'll be serving the traditional Irish-American dish of corned beef and cabbage. There will also be a parade in which our son's school is participating, as well as Irish music and dancing. Of course, I'm looking forward to a pint or two of the brewery's Stonewall Stout, even more than the food and entertainment.

By the time that celebration is over it will be just late-afternoon. But St. Patrick deserves a full day feast, so we've got another wonderful meal of corned beef, potatoes, cabbage planned for the evening. And some good Irish coffee for dessert.

It promises to be a fun day. The best part is that when the day is done we'll still have half the weekend to go. And that's a good thing, as I think I'll need some time to rest.

I wish you all, Irish today or year-round, a Happy St. Patrick's Day! I hope you have a festive day planned as well.

May St. Patrick guard you wherever you go, and guide you in whatever you do – and may his loving protection be a blessing to you always.

Saint Patrick's Day is this coming Saturday, March 17. That means it's time for the 10th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival at Blue & Gray Brewery.

The parade starts at noon, followed by an afternoon of Irish song and dance. The antique historic railroad cars of the National Railway Historical Society you see on the way to the brewery will be open for tours beginning at 10:00am. A "traditional" lunch of corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes will be available for purchase, as well as plenty of Blue & Gray beer. The Lee's Retreat Brewpub will be open for lunch for those preferring an inside meal. The brewery's infamous bourbon oak barrel-aged Russian imperial stout, Minor Dementia will also go on sale this day.

This event is free and family friendly. The celebration is also a fund raiser for local volunteer Fire & Rescue units. Fun times, great beer, and a worthy cause!

Sláinte!
