For a while I had named this thing ‘Fading the Line’ with the theme being ‘photos from the road’ or my chronicle of my life as a newspaper photographer. As occasionally happens, bloggery fell by the wayside for a variety of reasons but the main one was that I was pretty much tired of looking at my own pictures just about as soon as I pressed the shutter.

The thought of blathering on about pictures I did not care about was less than exciting so I just sort of stopped. In order to reverse the curse, I moved Fading the Line to Tumblr to make it easier to get pictures out there and to force myself to think a little more loosely about what I’m shooting. I’ll save this space for more of the work-related or behind-the-scenes things as well as stuff that might require a bit of explanation.

So, hopefully the 4 people that read this thing will continue to do so (thank you!) and you will also tune into FTL!

I recently wrapped up the winter All-Area sportraits. Of the bunch, I was really happy with this one of Avery Green, a basketball player for Courtland High School. He was fun to work with and was interested in the process of his portrait.  As I was writing this and looking at the other 6 photos in the series, all I could think of were excuses about why the pictures sucked. And since nobody likes hearing excuses, I’ll leave you with the one picture I actually liked. The rest were not bad; they were just average. It is definitely a bummer having to admit to a certain level of failure but I must say I came into the project without a clear plan or approach.  I think I’ll take the spring off and let one of my colleagues experience the joy that is All-Area while I cook up some ideas for our football preview!
