Laura Sellers is single, 24 years old and lives with her parents. Not unusual information, but not something you usually see on the resume of a candidate for the Stafford County Board of Supervisors. Sellers is the Democratic nominee, facing incumbent Mark Dudenhefer for the Garrisonville seat in November.
“Stafford needs a new political face,” she said. “I want to give the youth–high school students and people my age–a voice in Stafford.” “I want to live at home,” she added. “I don’t have to live at home.”
She decided it was time to get involved when she learned that one of her favorite teachers was considering a move to Spotsylvania for better pay.
“To hear that teachers are being taken advantage of–that impacted me,” Sellers said. “Their profession needs to be respected.”
She claims a systematic, research-based approach to her campaign, and believes her studying has made her familiar with the history of political issues in Stafford. Although she announced her campaign only days before the filing deadline, she said she has been preparing to run since February. “I am making sure that I’m doing this the right way,” Sellers said. “I’m always willing to listen and ask questions.
I’m not some kid who has nothing better to do.”

While it’s unexpected from any political figure to ask a third party to stop picking on someone’s opponent in an election year, it’s fair enough request to make as sometimes we bloggers take things a little too far (see daily posts at fred2blue.com for examples of bizarre viewpoints not grounded in reality) and about half of what I write! So I re-read my wholeheartedly tongue-in-cheek response to the article I referenced above in the Free Lance-Star and realized I was a touch harsh about Miss Laura’s age. I’ve never met Laura in person so I really don’t knowthat she says “like” and “totally” a lot for example, and for all I know, she’s a fricken genius who would make a fine supervisor and make great decisions.
Based solely on her quoted responses to the FLS writer (Jonas Beals), I made the judgements I made and chose to write my snarky perceptions that I was probably intended to have once the editors got hold of Jonas’ copy. It appears to me that the newspaper either chose to omit all the fantastic qualifications Laura Sellers has to become supervisor, OR they wrote a completely fair and impartial report of what she actually said and believes. YOU have to be the judge of that… blogs are merely a sounding board for one side of any story, and should never be taken as 100% factual. Nor should newspapers—read everything you can find on a subject and then find out for YOURSELF by getting involved in a campaign or at the very least picking up the phone or sending an email to hear a response to your concerns from the source.
With that being said, I think it takes a lot of class for the Dudester to take the time from his busy schedule to even care what a blogger says about anyone, let alone his opponent. Maybe this is yet another sign that the public is starting to take notice of the validity of viewpoints that are outside the MSM (MainStream Media) and maybe he’s forward thinking enough to acknowledge the repercussions our mighty blog has on the world-order and balance (probably not so much). I don’t agree with him that something I say would reflect poorly on “him” since he didn’t put words at my fingertips, but if the guy wants to fight his campaign mano-e-womano, then I’m going to let him do so. He is, after all, a U.S. Marine, so I think he can handle it.
I have LONG contended that printed newspapers, and even television news will be functionally DEAD in a decade or less as the NEW MEDIA world takes over with news reporting from the SOURCE of the news via cell phone video, podcasts, blogs, self-made video shows and so forth. If they manage to stay in business at all, it should be nearly inarguable that their impact on society and news gathering/reporting will be effectively neutered by then. Our society is much more ’self-aware’ than ever, and we finally have the power to communicate to the masses as individuals rather than via a handful of corruptible media-men (ahem Dan Rather, Walter Cronkite, New York Times, CNN).
The only trouble with a blog is that it is archived and by now people have cut & pasted it and emailed to friends, so to ‘delete’ an entry may be construed as trying to hide something, which I’m not (hence I use my real name), but I want to accommodate the request of the greatest supervisor to ever walk Garrisonville’s neighborhoods seeking to make life better for all in his county, so the next best thing to do is strike-through it and drop the subject.
Therefore- don’t read the following commentary!
Soooo…. maybe run for school board instead?
Maybe just stay home and Facebook with your friends as you complete your psychology degree?
I don’t mean to discourage young people from running, I think they should- but let’s be honest—that young person should be *exceptional* at what they are capable of when it comes to the public policy set for 140,000 of your fellow neighbors of all ages and needs.
Someone who hasn’t set foot in their own apartment for the first time, raised a family or begun her career to grasp what taxes and public services are all about—let alone learned how government works—should probably not run for an office she isn’t remotely qualified for.
What possible life experiences does she bring to your family’s home that makes her ready to set your tax rate and decide if you get a cop or fireman to respond to your needs?
Examine the life experience and perspective that make Laura qualified to be your next supervisor:
… or you can just choose the incumbent, Mark Dudenhefer, retired Marine officer and someone who requires no “on the job” training. Oh, and Mark lives in his own house and pays his own real estate taxes too.

Priceless! Obama really has no respect for life at all. Not the preborn, and not the elderly. How selfish can one man be?
Planned Parenthood is so proud of Obama. This is the type of thing that great pro-life organizations like American Life League fight against all the time. Being pro-life isn’t just about being anti-abortion, it’s about human rights at all ages and the dignity that all life deserves, not the least of which is the right to life itself!

Krystal Ball’s Federal Elections Commission report was released today in her campaign to bring her experience in baby diapers and passion for nuclear-free $100,000 teachers to the forefront of U.S. Congress.
Representative Rob Wittman, the incumbent, is prudently not taking her candidacy as a joke (as I am) and is working at his usual breakneck speed to balance both the job of being a real congressman and being the eternal candidate that our system requires of our House of Representatives every two years.
While it is not unusual to see contributors from outside one’s home district in this age of borderless areas—like EUROPE— I don’t think I’ve ever seen a report that had such a disproportion such as this: Crystal Ball FEC contributors report .
What you’ll see here in the PDF is 68 cash contributions listed totaling $96,215.00 . Not bad for a first time candidate about 16 months to election day. However, she’ll need something on the order of $1-2 million to give it a real effort if she’s going to unseat one of the hardest working guys in politics today. There’s always “hope” for Krystal, and who knows- we may see Terry McAuliffe back in Virginia to help her out with a really big check. [cue the dramatic music]
But dig just under the surface a bit and you’ll see her source of cash revealed like the Dariyanani family… huge Hillary Clilnton and Obama/Biden supporters for example using profit money from companies like LeapFrog (a toy designed to make kids work harder and smarter) to elect liberals (who work hard to make kids dumber.)
No wait- that’s her husband and his family. Now why doesn’t he show up in her campaign photos anywhere? It’s like reading a “Where’s Waldo” book.
Maybe it’s because there’s something to hide from his financial attachment to a URANIUM company and its foreign holdings? … I’m just sayin … Congresswoman … Uranium … secret husband … foreign money … multiple finance and capital corporations funding a 27 year-old no name candidate!?!? I think there’s a new Bourne movie in the works here.
That’s not as interesting as the locations of the rest of her cash: NV, CA, NY, UT, AZ, MD, NM, WA, TX, FL, MI, OK and Switzerland!
So wait, contributions from major liberal underwriters, a bunch of lawyers, a bunch of investment holding companies and a Uranium stock holder all get intermixed with a Swiss chocolate company to contribute to Krystal’s success? No wait- mistake- the Swiss company is a capital lender (whew!) that makes it less suspicious.
No need for a terrorist watch list to get triggered here folks. Nothing to see. She’s no pro-life, conservative, advocating for constitutional principles or part of a church organization. She passes with flying colors- give her the special red badge to get into congressional appropriations meetings.
When you boil it down to the same families and households (pets and 4 year old kids count in ACORN elections too,) then there’s more like 30-ish unique donors. and there’s some heavy hitters in there like housewife Shabnam Jessa who gave the maximum allowed $4,800. Not to be outdone, Bharat Bhise kicked in $500, Manisha Sabnani’s husband Sanji offered up $2,400 and Michael Moore “weighed in” with $1,000.
Now THAT’S GRASSROOTS fundraising folks– Virginia style! Okay, so she’s “popular” with the boys, no harm there. but wait- shouldn’t we add up how much money she raised in VIRGINIA? … from her constituents? … from the people who will VOTE FOR HER?
In what appears to be an after thought on the list, Krystal added herself last with a $500 donation whose aggregate donation to her own campaign is now $1,000 … that’s putting your money where your mouth is Krystal and I applaud you for your dedication. Once her family is removed from the donation record, we see the final tally from Virginians to the Krystal Ball for Congress campaign is a total of $1,750.
You be the judge who wants to see this kid elected. I’m just thinking it’s NOT VIRGINIANS IN THE 1st CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT is all.

The comments at Metafilter are pretty good too.
There is way too much here for me to process. However, his overall point goes back to something I realized a few weeks ago. I mentioned it on Facebook, don’t think I ever did a blog post on it though. The reason that for profit health insurance doesn’t work is that the incentives are not aligned properly. Publicly traded companies exist to maximize shareholder profit. That is how the system works. It works pretty damn well for most things, but not for health care. Insurance companies maximize profit by minimizing how much they payout on claims. Insurance plans are purchased by companies that are trying to balance offering a competitive benefits package to attract high quality employees with minimizing costs. Insurance companies want to sell insurance plans for as much as possible while payout out as few claims as possible.
Do you notice what is missing there? There is absolutely no concern or even recognition of you. Nobody involved gives a damn about you.
I’m not saying that a single payer system would be overwhelmed with personal care. A bureaucrat is a bureaucrat, government or large corporation, it doesn’t really matter. Neither has your best interests at heart. But at least the government bureaucrat in theory works for you as a taxpayer. The insurance companies don’t even pretend to answer to the consumer anymore. They are working in conjunction with our employers to shift more and more of the bloated cost of the current system onto us.
Back in the early ’90s, or back during the time that the Clinton plan was being debated, 95 cents out of every dollar was sent, you know, on average was used by the insurance companies to pay claims. Last year, it was down to just slightly above 80 percent.
Also, I can’t help but wonder about how the economy might be supercharged if keeping your job to maintain health insurance was no longer an issue. Millions of people would be able to follow their dreams and start companies. The increased job mobility between companies would likely increase overall pay levels and corporate America wouldn’t have the health insurance trump card that allows them to neglect other issues related to compensation and the work-home lifestyle balance.
Republican trumped up horror stories aside, the cold hard truth is that every other civilized country in the world provide health services for its citizens. Republicans claim to be patriotic, yet at the same time they claim to believe that we are too ignorant and too stupid to do something already being done by Canada. I mean, come on people, we are talking about Canada here!
Just kidding Ron and Andrea 
The proper American attitude here should be Screw Canada. Anything they can do, we can do better. If Canada provides comprehensive health care for its citizens,we’ll go one better.

Will this be the number of United States Senators who vote in lockstep with their Fuhrer und Frau anti-woman, anti-life Nancy Pelosi? Or, will some remain loyal to their country and vote their actual conscience? At the very least, will some remain loyal to their CONSTITUENTS who are made up of BOTH Democrats and Republicans.
Time will tell.
