WASHINGTON (AP) _ Barack Obama named Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware as his vice presidential running mate early Saturday, balancing his ticket with a seasoned congressional veteran well-versed in foreign policy and defense issues.
Obama announced the pick on his Web site with a photo of the two men and an appeal for donations. A text message went out shortly afterward that said, “Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee.”
Biden, 65, has twice sought the White House, and is a Catholic with blue-collar roots, a generally liberal voting record and a reputation as a long-winded orator.
Across more than 30 years in the Senate, he has served at various times not only as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee but also as head of the Judiciary Committee, with its jurisdiction over anti-crime legislation, Supreme Court nominees and Constitutional issues.
In selecting Biden, Obama passed over several other potential running mates, none more prominent than former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, his tenacious rival in dozens of primaries and caucuses.
Obama’s campaign arranged a debut for the newly minted ticket on Saturday outside the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Ill.
Obama’s decision leaked to the media several hours before his aides planned to send a text message announcing the running mate, negating a promise that people who turned over their phone numbers would be the first to know who Obama had chosen. The campaign scrambled to send the text message after the leak, sending phones buzzing at the inconvenient time of just after 3 a.m. on the East coast.
Hundreds of miles to the west, carpenters, electricians, sound stage gurus and others transformed the Pepsi Center in Denver into a made-for-television convention venue.
Tucked away in one corner were thousands of lightweight rolled cardboard tubes, ready-made handles for signs bearing the names of the Democratic ticket — once the identity of Obama’s running mate was known.
Osama Bin Biden 2008… The Change America has already seen in the Senate since 1972.

Remember the name Richard Amrhine. His column in the Free Lance-Black Hole is a museum piece of lefty elitism - the pure, distilled, undiluted version. The entire column, in fact, reminds me of a famous phrase for those of us who got sucked into the Babylon 5 craze (Londo Molari, In the Beginning):
Arrogance and stupidity, all in the same package. How efficient of you.
To give you an idea of what I mean, let’s dive into the column. The first two paragraphs are full of the usual lefty rant against campaign promises - honesty never being much of a value on the left:
CANDIDATES love to accuse one another of breaking past campaign promises. They do that because it raises questions of credibility and overall honesty. The accusing candidate is convinced that pointing out such contradictory behavior gives voters doubts about his opponent while providing traction to his own campaign.
Smart voters know, however, that campaign “promises” are no such thing. They represent a wish list and should be characterized as goals. Because they want to sound authoritative, candidates will sound as though they are promising this or that. Voters need to understand that circumstances change, and that such pledges hinge on a legislature going along with an idea and funding it if necessary.
In other words, voters should simply accept that candidates don’t say what they mean, or don’t have the fortitude to follow through on their promises. Never mind that this practically eliminates any way for voters to inform themselves about the candidates, or hold those they elect accountable. Of course, for the elite left, it’s all about getting politicians to listen to them - which they know requires hoodwinking the majority of Americans.
Amrhine then goes on to get recent Virginia history wrong, in particular Mark Warner’s record:
. . . Warner inherited a budget very much out of balance, a problem the depth of which Gilmore hid well. The only way Warner could provide a constitutionally mandated balanced budget without dismantling necessary state services was to raise taxes.
Good thing Warner hadn’t painted himself into a corner by signing one of those absurd no-tax pledges that Republicans favor.
This is flat-out, 100% false. Mark Warner did much more than merely prevent the “dismantling necessary state services.” He dramatically expanded Medicaid and busted the budget in the process. Moreover, Warner actually did dismantle a state service - transportation. He gutted the transportation budget in 2002 and then demanded northern Virginia and Hampton Roads raise taxes to restore the roads budget. Of course, Amrhine may have still been in the Fredericksburg area back then, and likely didn’t notice, but ignorance of the facts never really slowed lefties down.
Amrhine then decides to opine about the Presidential race, with the usual lefty nonsense (”I wouldn’t say the coverage is biased”) along with some ridiculously ignorant commentary:
But the quantity of coverage suggests to even casual observers that McCain risks becoming the forgotten candidate.
It’s partly because, for example, while Obama is responding to the adoration of 200,000 in Berlin, McCain is reminding us to wash our vegetables before eating them. Which one would you think deserves better play?
Gee, I don’t know, Richard. How about the candidate who took the lead on the Georgia crisis and the offshore drilling issue? Perhaps Amrhine might have noticed McCain while he was swooning over Obama’s Berlin speech.
Finally, perhaps having noticed his drivel wouldn’t get anywhere, Amrhine resorts to the race card:
The polls show Obama and McCain surprisingly–to me–close. That can be only because more Americans than I care to think reject Obama because of his name, color, and diverse background. These are people who, if his words were coming from a white face, might actually agree with what he says.
Is that so, Richard? Are you saying no Americans could possibly come to the conclusion that Obama is just too inexperienced and to suffused with moral relativism? Should no one be upset by his refusal to support a bill to protect babies born alive? Can no voter decide that its better to support the candidate who actually voted against the President’s Big-Corn fiasco?
I can assure you, Richard, that I wouldn’t agree with Barack Obama no matter what color he was, and for you to insinuate otherwise is an insult to me and every single John McCain supporter in America.
Then again, considering how little Amrhine actually knows about this campaign, I can’t be surprised. Come to think of it, the Free Lance-Black Hole is perfect for him.

McCain seems to think this is a bad thing.
Yes, this is a real McCain campaign ad. It’s not a spoof.
BTW, in a highly scientific poll of all the hot chicks that will talk to me, Mrs. ODonnellWeb confirmed her support for Obama. So apparently the thesis is true. Hot chicks do dig Obama.
When your campaign releases an ad that closes with the line Hot chicks dig Obama it’s an admission that you have no compelling argument for your candidacy.
There is a raging, troll laden argument in the Fark comments about whether or not the ad is racist. Is a group of cute young white women saying how much they like the black guy supposed to mean something? Given the high power campaign staff at work here, it is hard to believe that somebody didn’t question why the “representative hot chicks” aren’t actually representative of the population of hot chicks.
Another thought, if you are a 20 something hipster guy, doesn’t this ad basically tell you that supporting Obama will improve your odds this weekend? No need to dress up to go bar hopping, just wear your Obama 08 t-shirt, and make sure you have a condom.
Review of the book

McCain tried, and mostly failed, to make an issue out the fact that Obama canceled a planned visit to a military hospital in Germany last week. It turns out that it didn’t matter either way what Obama did, because McCain had an ad ready to go blasting Obama for using the troops for political gain by visiting them.
Isn’t what McCain did the very definition of using the troops for politics? I used to think he was a decent and honest man, just misguided. Turns out he is just as big a slime bucket as the rest of them.
If you are going to write letters to the editors of a paper 600 miles from where you live, at least try to have one fact right in letter. The people voting for Nader are not people that would otherwise vote for McCain. If anybody is wasting a vote is the author of this letter, since he is clearly voting in complete ignorance.
This is in response to Monica Johnson’s letter, in which she says she is going to vote for Ralph Nader because she doesn’t want to waste her vote [”Ralph Nader will have my vote this fall,” July 29].
That is exactly what she is doing, since he has no chance of winning.
If she throws her vote away, she may help elect the most evil of the candidates, Sen. Obama.

According to the Free Lace-Black Hole, Supervisor Emmitt Marshall (his district is next to mine) tried to intervene in an animal cruelty case involving the dogs of a son’s friend. Now, before everyone goes beating up Marshall (who is one of the four tax-hikers on the Spotsy BOS), let’s not forget that this is the Free Lance-Black Hole here. Moreover, these were apparently hunting dogs, so we can expect at least in part a rural-suburban division on the reaction within the county.
One part of the story, however, threw me (same link - the dog owner in question is named Jake Payne):
Payne could not be reached for comment at his Louisa home yesterday.
Louisa?!?!
Look, I know Emmitt is not my Supervisor, but I think he could use some advice: if you’re going to get involved in something like this, at least make sure it’s for a constituent.
