N. Korea Threatening to Attack US Ships- Who Cares? We’ll Just Threaten Them More Sternly Then!

The last sentence is really the best part…

By HYUNG-JIN KIM, Associated Press Writer
SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea threatened military action Wednesday against U.S. and South Korean warships plying the waters near the Koreas’ disputed maritime border, raising the specter of a naval clash just days after the regime’s underground nuclear test.

In Washington, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton warned that Pyongyang faced unspecified consequences because of its “provocative and belligerent” acts.

Pyongyang, reacting angrily to Seoul’s decision to join an international program to intercept ships suspected of aiding nuclear proliferation, called South Korea’s decision tantamount to a declaration of war.

“Now that the South Korean puppets were so ridiculous as to join in the said racket and dare declare a war against compatriots,” North Korea is “compelled to take a decisive measure,” the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea said in a statement carried by state media.

The North Korean army called it a violation of the armistice the two Koreas signed in 1953 to end their three-year war, and said it would no longer honor the treaty.

South Korea’s military said Wednesday it was prepared to “respond sternly” to any North Korean provocation.

Clinton said “there are consequences to such actions,” referring to discussions in the United Nations meant to punish North Korea for its nuclear and missile tests.

She also underscored the firmness of the U.S. treaty commitment to defend South Korea and Japan, U.S. allies in easy reach of North Korean missiles.

North Korea’s latest belligerence comes as the U.N. Security Council debates how to punish the regime for testing a nuclear bomb Monday in what President Barack Obama called a “blatant violation” of international law.

Ambassadors from the five permanent veto-wielding council members — the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France — as well as Japan and South Korea were working out the details of a new resolution.

The success of any new sanctions would depend on how aggressively China, one of North Korea’s only allies, implements them.

“It’s not going too far to say that China holds the keys on sanctions,” said Kim Sung-han, an international relations professor at Seoul’s Korea University.

South Korea, divided from the North by a heavily fortified border, had responded to the nuclear test by joining the Proliferation Security Initiative, a U.S.-led network of nations seeking to stop ships from transporting the materials used in nuclear bombs.

Seoul previously resisted joining the PSI in favor of seeking reconciliation with Pyongyang, but pushed those efforts aside Monday after the nuclear test in the northeast.

North Korea warned Wednesday that any attempt to stop, board or inspect its ships would constitute a “grave violation.”

The regime also said it could no longer promise the safety of U.S. and South Korean warships and civilian vessels in the waters near the Korea’s western maritime border.

“They should bear in mind that the (North) has tremendous military muscle and its own method of strike able to conquer any targets in its vicinity at one stroke or hit the U.S. on the raw, if necessary,” the army said in a statement carried by state media.

The maritime border has long been a flashpoint between the two Koreas. North Korea disputes the line unilaterally drawn by the United Nations at the end of the Koreas’ three-year war in 1953, and has demanded it be redrawn further south.

The truce signed in 1953 and subsequent military agreements call for both sides to refrain from warfare, but doesn’t cover the waters off the west coast.

North Korea has used the maritime border dispute to provoke two deadly naval skirmishes — in 1999 and 2002.

On Wednesday, the regime promised “unimaginable and merciless punishment” for anyone daring to challenge its ships.

Pyongyang also reportedly restarted its weapons-grade nuclear plant, South Korean media said.

The Chosun Ilbo newspaper said U.S. spy satellites detected signs of steam at the North’s Yongbyon nuclear complex, an indication it may have started reprocessing nuclear fuel. The report, which could not be confirmed, quoted an unidentified government official. South Korea’s Yonhap news agency also carried a similar report.

The move would be a major setback for efforts aimed at getting North Korea to disarm.

North Korea had stopped reprocessing fuel rods as part of an international deal. In 2007, it agreed to disable the Yongbyon reactor in exchange for aid and demolished a cooling tower at the complex.

The North has about 8,000 spent fuel rods which, if reprocessed, could allow it to harvest 13 to 18 pounds (six to eight kilograms) of plutonium — enough to make at least one nuclear bomb, experts said. North Korea is believed to have enough plutonium for at least a half dozen atomic bombs.

Further ratcheting up tensions, North Korea test-fired five short-range missiles over the past two days, South Korean officials confirmed.

Russia’s foreign minister said world powers must be firm with North Korea but take care to avoid inflaming tensions further.

The world “must not rush to punish North Korea just for punishment’s sake,” Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, adding that Russia wants a Security Council resolution that will help restart stalled six-nation talks over North Korea’s nuclear programs and will not provoke Pyongyang into even more aggressive activity.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak urged officials to “remain calm” in the face of North Korean threats, said Lee Dong-kwan, his spokesman.

Pyongyang isn’t afraid of any repercussions for its actions, a North Korean newspaper, the Minju Joson, said Wednesday.

“It is a laughable delusion for the United States to think that it can get us to kneel with sanctions,” it said in an editorial. “We’ve been living under U.S. sanctions for decades, but have firmly safeguarded our ideology and system while moving our achievements forward. The U.S. sanctions policy toward North Korea is like striking a rock with a rotten egg.”

N. Korea Detonates a Nuclear Bomb on Memorial Day- White House Knows Nothing About it Hours Later!

Author: From http://rappahannockred.wordpress.com • May 25th, 2009

It’s 3am…  I heard that warning somewhere…

So much for our fearless leader and his iPod diplomacy with terrorists! It’s Memorial Day weekend and North Korea just exploded a NUCLEAR BOMB! [no joke]

Did we know about this? According to the US Gubment, “We’re still trying to confirm this.”

Hello? Isn’t it a little late? The bomb done went off son–maybe the Richter scales going crazy in Japan can lend a clue!  Maybe North Korea saying they planned to do this months ago was a hint for the CIA to WATCH these clowns?

Maybe Nancy Pelosi, the #3 person in charge of America, can find someone in the CIA to whisper in her ear, and tell her what’s going on.  naahhh

Maybe Obama, can ask his teleprompter what to do.

Biden probably gave them the formula to build the damn thing in the first place!

This happens a couple of days after the former South Korean president commits suicide, and we’re supposed to say, “what a coincidence,” I guess.

I’ll bet the South Koreans are on crap-your-pants alert right now while we’re going to WalMart to get extra Doritos for the cookout tomorrow. I wonder if Obama’s lapdogs MSNBC and CNN will cover this at all.

Keep in mind according to the WaPo:

“We are aware of the reports of a nuclear test by North Korea,” a State Department official said late Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the test was not yet confirmed. “We are consulting with our allies. Once we have established the facts, we will have more to say.”

The country is believed to have enough plutonium to make six to eight bombs. Last month it said it would reopen its plutonium factory at Yongbyon to produce more.

Here’s the story from AP News just moments ago at 12:30am Monday…

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea announced Monday that it successfully carried out an underground nuclear test, weeks after threatening to restart its rogue atomic program.

The country’s official Korean Central News Agency called Monday’s test “part of measures to bolster its nuclear deterrent for self-defense.”

President Lee Myung-bak convened an emergency security session. His spokesman, Lee Dong-kwan, confirmed that a nuclear test may have been carried out in the North.

Seismologists from the U.S., South Korea and Japan reported earthquakes in an northeastern area, where North Korea conducted a nuclear test in 2006.

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake was registered in northeastern North Korea at 9:54 a.m. (0054 GMT), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake, measured at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers) underground, occurred 40 miles (70 kilometers) northwest of the city of Kimchaek, the USGS said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency also said it detected seismic activity Monday morning. “We are checking whether they were due to a nuclear test,” agency official Gen Aoki said in Tokyo.

In Seoul, the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources reported a 4.5-magnitude quake in Kilju in North Hamgyong Province.

North Korea also carried out a nuclear test in October 2006 in Kilju, a test that drew sanctions from the United Nations and prompted five other nations to push negotiations on a nuclear disablement-for-aid pact with North Korea.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Andy Laine said the U.S. government had no confirmation of a new nuclear test.

“At this point we’ve seen the reports and we’re trying to get more information, but we’re not able to confirm at this time,” Laine said.

Deceased victim of a stabbing, George Clayton Fry

…or has it always been like this??

Do you recognize these guys from your last trip to the day care center? They were next door neighbors who lived right on the Fauquier/Stafford border on the Stafford side for all their lives.

Just how close are they to your $500k house?  You might be surprised!

monroe

Career criminal James Dewey Monroe

Monroe has a LONG history of shooting at people, tresspassing, squatting, messing with erosion controls on the Rappahannock shoreline (with a bulldozer), alcoholism, family abuse.  You may recall- he’s the guy who yanked a couple of kids off their 4-wheelers and spraypainted them because he thought they were on his property…. funny thing is that he doesn’t OWN any property!

He’s living on his family’s land and they have been tied up in court for years to get him off of it!

But his most recent “oopsie” that the court system has allowed to occur is ole James allegedly took a stroll and stabbed his neighbor to death in his trailor.  [read FLS story here]

That’s right folks- the next time you have to go to court for a parking ticket, or have to visit the courthouse a 5th time for a building permit, or argue until you’re blue in the face that Patriot Towing company stole your car again, or your HOA is suing you for that American flag in your yard– just remember that while YOU are treated like a criminal by the elitist few whom we allow to be our judges, their liberal spine tells them that animals like Monroe should be given another chance to live among the rest of us, and we should pay a fine.

The justice system has failed Staffordians miserably, and now someone is dead because of it.  Which judge set this guy free most recently?

Yep- welcome to Stafford County- where men are men … and sheep are very nervous around some men.

Deeds, Moran and McAuliffe … Oh MY!

Forget lions, tigers and bears… fear *any one* of these guys getting in the Virginia governor’s office!

from the Richmond Times Dispatch:

WILLIAMSBURG — Campaign contributions sparked the most pointed jabs yesterday as the three Democratic gubernatorial candidates did little to highlight their policy differences in their first debate.

Former Del. Brian J. Moran of Alexandria, state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds of Bath County and Terry McAuliffe of McLean, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, hit on a wide range of issues, from the state’s ban on same-sex marriage (they all oppose the ban) to teacher salaries (they all want to raise them).

During the largely civil 90-minute debate before an audience of 500 people at the College of William and Mary, some of the most heated discussion surrounded campaign finances. Moran’s fundraising report for the first quarter included $80,000 he collected from 18 contractors that are longtime backers of his brother, Rep. James P. Moran, D-8th, a member of the House Appropriations defense subcommittee.

Deeds asked McAuliffe whether those contributions violated federal campaign laws. “You should refer that to the U.S. attorney’s office,” McAuliffe said. Moran defended the contributions: “These are Virginia companies with Virginia employees who are protecting Virginians overseas and here at home.”

McAuliffe brought in cash from big names in the first quarter, including former President Bill Clinton and real estate mogul and reality TV star Donald Trump. “Terry’s fundraised in places I’ve never been — Park Avenue, Hollywood,” Moran said.

Deeds punctuated his closing remarks by saying the Democrats will not be the party of the middle class if the party’s nominee is beholden to Trump or defense contractors.

“We will have lost our way if we allow the Wall Street establishment or corrupt political establishment to control our agenda for the next four years,” Deeds said.

The candidates all talked about fixing the state’s transportation woes. Moran said that last year Deeds did not support the transportation proposal that Gov. Timothy M. Kaine called the legislature into special session to consider.

Deeds backed a Senate plan that included a gas tax. Moran said, “When [Kaine] needed people to stand with him . . . I stood with him at his press conference. I didn’t see you there.” ..READ MORE

Tax Day Tea Party in Fredericksburg

Don Giles of Fredericksburg carries a sign during a Tax Day Tea Party at which people protested what they see as excessive taxation and government spending outside the Fredericksburg Post Office on April 15, 2009. (Mike Morones/The Free Lance-Star)

I was assigned to cover a tax day tea party in the Burg yesterday. At first I wanted to do portraits of some of the people and record some audio of them explaining why they showed up. When I arrived, I found a lot more people than originally expected. They were packed into a fairly small area so I bagged my original idea and just tried to get the flavor of the scene. Sadly there were no counter-protesters so it was difficult to find much more than sign pictures. Anyway, here’s a little slideshow I put together in Final Cut Pro, which I am quickly warming up to. Now I just need to improve my video skills…

Anyway, I’ve been quiet lately and need to post a backlog of pictures and news so look for that soon.

CNN Godwins its own story

In this case, they may have a point. The Homeland security report about right wing groups is much ado about nothing. The government keeps an eye on ELF and the more extreme left wing groups. It really shouldn’t be a surprise when they watch the right to.

Of course, in conservative speak, watching the right is tyranny. Watching the left is vigilance.

Anyway, back to the point of this post. The image embedded in this CNN article really isn’t fair. When I think Micheal Farris, Michelle Malkin, and their ilk. I don’t think Nazis.

… you KNOW it’s a slow news day at the ole Free Slant-Star when….

This just in… and it’s front page —above the fold— prime story news folks… and it’s “possibly” the most significant story in our area’s history!
( At least this is where stories like that *SHOULD* go)

No, it’s not an Obama pro-abortion appointee or his plans to spend 10 generations of retirement cash on his Wall Street friends’ new yachts.

No we STILL haven’t caught Osama Bin Laden.

No, it’s not a new business that sprung up in the area employing hundreds.

No, it’s not Spotsy School Superintendent Jerry Hill and his board of yes-men fleecing taxpayers for the fattest retirement ever heard of.

No, it’s not another public lawsuit against the Democrat-controlled Stafford Board of Supervisors for taking your property rights away.

No, it’s not another huge bonus MediCorp will pay tax-hiking VA Senator Edd Houck now that he’s on staff with them.

It’s not even about a marginally-newsworthy three-wheeled-Camry driving, drunk University of Mary Washington president on another bender.

Nope. “Even better, more riveting and fascinating”… are you salivating yet??

Are you READY TO HAVE YOUR MIND BLOWN???

“CITY MANAGER TAKES LEAVE”

Nick Cadwallender screams “STOP THE PRESSES!” and it could be heard for miles, combined with the din of similar cries, as internal FLS gossiping from Dan Telvock and Karen Bolipata’s desks reached a level of fervor that nearly deafened Emily Battle before she could get the “no comment” she needed to make the story all the more interesting…. it got so loud that these rumblings set off tremors in the Earth— so much so, that Confederate soldiers rattled out of their coffins from across the street resulting in a breakdown of the very fabric that separates time and space itself, causing North and South soldier zombies to roam Caroline Street and dance in unison to Michael Jackson’s Thriller!  ALL BECAUSE:

A separated (yeah, still legally married) man told his bosses that he was interested in dating one of his 600+ employees (which he’s offered solutions to supervisory concerns) —and all hell breaks loose at the Free Lance-Star news desk!  [READ HERE]

Why?  The guy happens to be a city manager.  OOohhhh …  wait a minute…. HUH???  *YAWN*

This is the kind of life “rubber-necking” that, if it were a traffic issue, causes a 20 mile backup on I-95 for no good reason but leaves you late for work and really begrudged that all you got to see was a bent fender on a Camry and a cop writing a ticket for an improper lane change!

Does anyone else wonder why there are more Washington Post subscriptions in the region than the only LOCAL “news”paper?

Is it me or is this NOT news? But if it is news because it’s an employee-employer thing, is it front page, above the fold news?  Is it really our business what his legal status is?  Is the FLS going to report on every lead of every scorned ex-wife in the region? Why is the manager of a city any more important than the manager of a WalMart or Insurance agency?

“Second” Candidate to Announce He’d like to be Our Next RPV Chair is…

Author: From http://rappahannockred.wordpress.com • Apr 1st, 2009
   Category: Blog Entries.Local, Politics

The first is none other than Jeff Frederick himself! According to a lefty blog anyway. h/t to Darl Anderson for reporting that Frederick apparently said that if he is sacked on April 4, he will run again at the convention.

Rumors of JFred’s additional hearing-related questioning are flying about regarding an alleged and unprecedented $1,500 reimbursement per month for mileage he couldn’t have driven (and HOD also paid for travel reimbursement during the same period), and $1,200/mo rent for a space that he’s allotted full funds from the HOD and reimburses himself from RPV money for, and the unsubstantiated rumors that he was paid $500 per month to host a ‘coming soon’ RPV web page for 5 months, and the rumors that he paid more than $4,000 per month for web hosting and updates to a friend’s company to host and ‘maintain’ the current RPV web site.  All just rumors to be discussed April 4th at the executive-session State Central Committee lynching — meeting.

Now, a second candidate has emerged!  (why anyone would want this non-paid position after the mess JFred AND SCC have created, I have no idea.)

But he’s my newest Republican hero and has no known skeletons to worry about.

He comes from a simple all-American beginning, and has (unsuccessfully) run for public office once before in Prince William County.  He’s never been accused of being anything more than a bit  spicy at times with his interactions with Democrats (who can stomach him that is) which is good enough for my taste.

Though he’s quite healthy, his call sign was “Porky” in the Air Force where he served in several hot zones with distinction.  Though he’s not one for being seen in fancy restaurants, he can be quite a ham when you get to know him, but he always leaves you feeling good about yourself (and your political party) when you have him over for dinner which he says is his best attribute, “being good with a one-on-one relationship with each voter.”  We are READY for a REAL grassroots leader aren’t we?

His web site is not yet completed, but you can get to know him from the remnants of his last election web site …

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present the more qualified – and much more likeable — NEXT RPV chairman…. [link here]
